ATXHS in the time of Covid-19

Because we serve a broad range of communities, and pretty much the definition of a shared workshop is to share air and surfaces, and we want to help keep our communities safe, ATXHS closed temporarily on March 14th for 9 weeks, to reduce the spread of Covid-19. This gave us a chance to organize PPE-making efforts [email covid-discussion [at] atxhs.org if you need face shields! We can send them by mail, or bring them to you if you're in Austin.] We've followed our city and county efforts to keep people at home and safe: [1]. Though there's not as much "hang out" time at the space as there used to be, we have been remaining active with members digitally and several teams of members who continue to help get us through, making sure we have supplies for sanitizing, that major questions of safety and access are being answered, and that we don't stop building our community, though our processes for just about everything have had to change.

THANK YOU.

On May 9, we began the first phase of reopening, with limited-hour access to members experiencing hardship based on their responses to our member survey. This was discussed in our member meeting on May 6 (meeting minutes available here). For the latest details on our reopening, check out our reopening plan document.

We're really thankful for our committed volunteers, including the ATXHS board, who have looked out for fellow members, who are now reaching out to make sure all members who want to are able to access the space safely. These involved members have spent hundreds of hours reading, researching, talking to county officials, calling community members to check in, thinking about our community's needs, and carefully weighing each decision made around this pandemic. It's important to us to keep members engaged and connected through digital channels and will continue to work to make sure our reopening is both safe and responsible.

GoFundMe for COVID Responders:

We have a group of members and other local makers working together to manufacture equipment that will directly assist healthcare workers and COVID response efforts. We will have one individual using our facilities to produce items, allowing us to continue eliminating potential for community spread at the space. We also have an amazing small army of members using their own equipment at home. Many of our members are out of work and producing these essential items on their own time and their own dime. To help with the monetary cost, we have started a GoFundMe to gather funds to reimburse members for materials purchased for these efforts. Please share this GoFundMe page with anyone you think may be interested!

If you have any questions or are a medical facility wanting to receive PPE or other items from us, please email covid@atxhs.org.

MEMBER EVENTS:

We have hosted a handful of video conference events and will be updating our calendar with new ones as they are scheduled. Events we have recorded will be posted here. Check out our Calendar for other digital events as they are created. We are currently hosting a weekly recurring Workshop Show & Tell every Saturday at 4pm to give members an opportunity to connect, share what they've been working on, and show their home workshops. Zoom info is shared in the atxhs-announce and atxhs-members listservs.
If there is something specific you'd like to see, please give us feedback here on digital events.

ATX Hackerspace is a member-run collaborative art, craft and fabrication space in Northeast Austin.
These are some of the resources available for members' use:

Metal shop (includes MIG and TIG welders, plasma cutter, grinders, bandsaw and chopsaws)
Industrial woodshop (includes lathes, saws, router, sander, hand tools)
Industrial sewing studio, leather and shoemaking classes
Two Laser engravers
▪ multiple 3-d printers
CNC router
Auto bay and tools
Bio lab
Rentable classroom

We are a community of passionate experts, learners, makers, artists, geeks, parents, children, students, and professionals. You are likely to find expert advice and eager collaborators for anything you're looking to build. As members, we give our time freely to support the space because we believe this space is of value to our community. Since we do this in our free time, response times to ATXHS email and questions will vary. A class or a competency check-off is required for access to many of the resources listed above.

ATX Hackerspace can be found at:

9701 Dessau Road, Building 3, Suite 304, Austin TX 78754

To learn more about our space, come to a Hackerspace Tour: 20-minute tours kick off every Tuesday at 7:00pm and 7:30pm. We will show you the wonders of the space — tools and community — and answer your questions about our tools, methods, and membership. Please be advised that if Tuesday falls on a holiday, there will probably still be a member there who can show you around, but you may not be able to register on that day. If you're not sure if you'll find what you need, just show up and learn the lay of the land.

To join, attend a New Member Orientation every Tuesday at 8pm. If you can't be free then, contact us to arrange an alternative time.

The Calendar lists other recurring events, such as the Member Meeting on the 1st-Wednesday of each month and the Make/Teach/Learn Member meeting on the 3rd Wednesday of each month. If you have burning questions not answered here, please email board@atxhs.org.

Next Work Day on Sat Jan 11th 9am to 6pm. Come help improve the space, Lunch served! Stop by for an hour or for all 8 like a hero.We ask that members not use the shop for regular work, though exceptions may be granted as necessary for volunteers.

We held our Annual Meeting on Saturday December 14th from 12pm to 2pm for voting B-share members. This meeting was especially important, as we voted on important amendments to the operating agreement and preparing plans for the long-hoped for transition to non-profit status. We will announce the schedule of Quarterly Meetings near the start of the year for board and enthusiastic members to plan the future of the space.

only $75.00 per month

Membership earns you 24/7 access to the space following a mandatory free orientation class. Several of the tools and areas require a training class. A few of the more popular tools require a calendar reservation so that you can be sure to run your job to completion. Apart from reasonable fees for classes and consumable costs, there are no additional usage fees. We also offer a Family Rate and a Starving Hacker Rate if you're interested. If you have already signed up, come by Tuesday at 8:00 pm for an orientation class and to get your key fob access.

The space is run by volunteers, for volunteers. Members are asked to help us grow, groom and improve the space. Ask around for how you can help!

See our Member Handbook for all the details on community procedures, policies and benefits.

What is ATX Hackerspace?

We are a collaborative industrial workshop full of people who love to learn and make things!

We have over 8,000 square feet of space that is perfect for artists, designers, engineers, makers and hackers, fabbers, scientists, musicians, seminars and workshops, co-working, and a ton of other stuff. We're the perfect place for any project that needs space, involves loud or messy equipment (woodworking, soldering, welding, painting), power (we have 120V, 240V, and 3-phase power), tools that are too expensive or large for your own workshop ( see our laser cutters, CNC mills, and 3D printers ) or meeting with collaborators.

More importantly, we are an established and ever-growing community. Imagine what we can do when we combine our skills, knowledge, ideas, tools, and materials... or see for yourself at our next Hackerspace Tour, every Tuesday evening starting at 7:00pm and 7:30pm.

We're hackers (thoroughly defined here), which means we create things and we put things together in new and innovative ways. ATX Hackerspace is dedicated to encouraging and promoting technical, scientific, and artistic skills through projects, collaboration, and education by all legal means.

Hours and Events

Members are given 24-hour access and may bring up to two guests to the space at any time.

Visitors are invited to attend our Hackerspace Tours - every Tuesday evening starting at 7:00pm and 7:30pm - or any of the open events on our Calendar or Meetup page.

"I'm here because I work with computers...

I'm here to work with my hands, and actually complete something."
